The Art of Sport
A project by the students of Rushey Mead Secondary School, Leicester

The Art of Sport project celebrates the links between Art & Sport. The Olympic values are central to the project.
The project was inspired by a Youth Sport Trust workshop attended by 2 students and 2 staff from Rushey Mead. The day featured Olympic athlete and artist Roald Bradstock.
Throughout the project students worked independently for the ultimate goal of producing a final piece for the exhibition. The cut collage technique requires the use a craft knife, with skill and control, in order to achieve an end result. This is akin to the focus, control and safety needed in sport.
Competitive group work was used in the project to gain experience of team work & the Olympics. Groups set their own targets and worked towards a competition, judged by international visitors.

We were fortunate to experience the 2010 Winter Olympics during the project. This allowed students to draw from watching live recordings of winter sports in the IT classroom. This was challenging but exciting. Students used their knowledge of figure drawing but had the added challenge of drawing the figure whilst moving. The work of Contemporary artist Gary Hume was used to inspire students to experiment with taking creative risks and overlapping techniques.

Student’s independent learning was encouraged throughout the project with research and presentations on the work of artists from the Futurist movement as well as contemporary artists such as Gary Hume and Roald Bradstock.
We hope you enjoy the work!
Miss Woolridge would like to thank all year 8 students involved and all staff who supported.
