Sport & Health

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games provide an ideal opportunity to inspire a wide range of people in Leicester and Leicestershire to become more active and to create a lasting legacy of increased participation in sport and physical activity, sports volunteering and in elite sport development.

It is an ambition of all those involved directly or indirectly in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games that the Games act as a catalyst to generate and grow interest in sport and physical activity, at all levels, and across all communities. This renewed interest in sport is anticipated to contribute positively to reducing inequalities, improving the nation’s health, and tackling the UK’s growing challenge of unhealthy weight.

We will use the 2012 Games in to encourage more options and greater choice for people in Leicester and Leicestershire to think about physical activity, diet and nutrition. Our aim is to help reduce health inequalities amongst all sections of the community. This is crucial, since physical inactivity, coupled with an unhealthy diet, has contributed to a rapid increase in obesity in adults and children over the last 20 years.
