Sport and fitness takes centre stage at leisure centre

SPORT, fitness and healthy activities will be taking centre stage at an event in Beaumont Leys this weekend.

Families will get the chance to try out a range of sports and get advice on improving their health at the event, which takes place at Leicester Leys Leisure Centre will host a family health event on Sunday, April 1, from 10am to 2pm.

The event, which has been organised by leisure centre staff and key local health agencies, will offer a range of healthy lifestyle activities and information on easy ways to keep fit and healthy.

Activities will include children's swimming sessions, yoga for two to seven year olds, zumba for children, junior basketball, Cardio Combat for children aged 14 and over, a climbing wall and a bouncy castle.

There will also be health checks and advice covering diabetes, stopping smoking, healthy eating, alternative therapies, heart health, dental care and advice on cancer care.

Leicester assistant city mayor responsible for heritage, leisure and sport, Cllr Piara Singh Clair, said: "One of our key priorities is to encourage more residents to lead healthier lifestyles.

"I hope people turn out in force to get all sorts of information and advice on making healthier lifestyle choices, as well as trying out the diverse range of family fun leisure activities on offer throughout the day."

The event is free entry, but some activities carry a small charge of 50p per child and £1 per adult. All money raised will be donated to the British Lung Foundation and Glenfield Hospital.
