Wear it Red Day

Wear it Red Day

Date: Sat 25th February 2012, 00:00

Venue: Leicester

Raising cash for charity is at heart of event.

PEOPLE are being encouraged to run, walk or cycle in a bid to raise cash for charity.

Leicester City Council has organised four walks, two bike rides and a running event in aid of the British Heart Foundation.

It is the second year running the event has been held, with participants raising £2,200 in 2011.

The events will all take place on Saturday 25 February - Wear it Red Day - from 1.30pm and participants are encouraged to wear something red.

Five of our leisure centres will be acting as starting points, while the city centre will be the finishing destination.

A 1.6 mile walk will start at Aylestone Leisure Centre, while a 2.1 mile walk and a five mile bike ride will begin at Braunstone Leisure Centre. Cossington Street Sports Centre will be the starting point of a 1.3 mile walk and a five mile cycle, Spence Street Sports Centre a 1.3 mile walk and New Parks Leisure Centre a 2.6 mile run.

All participants will finish their run, walk or bike ride at the Big Screen on Humberstone Gate in the city centre.

Assistant City Mayor councillor Manjula Sood will be supporting the event on the day by waving off walkers and cyclists from Cossington Street Sports Centre.

Cllr Sood, who is cabinet lead for health at Leicester City Council, added: "Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, is our biggest cause of early death in the city.

"I hope this event can raise awareness of the significant dangers of this killer disease, as well as the wonderful work of the British Heart Foundation."

Cllr Sood added: "The council, in partnership with the NHS, is also working to combat heart disease in the city as part of Leicester's Healthy Heart campaign.

"If we can help prevent just one person dying of the disease, we will have been successful."

Places for the Wear it Red event are limited, so to book a place, contact April Alcott, exercise referral officer at Leicester City Council, on 0116 299 5585.
